The Story Behind Moja

Moja is a song about searching. It's about trying to find yourself, someone, or something. Sometimes, you don't even know exactly what you're looking for. You just know that you're searching: that you're trying to find meaning, make a connection, or feel something.

That's what Moja means to me.

I made the song around the same time as Nyumbani, and in many ways, the two are siblings. They share a similar sound, sitting somewhere in that Afro-house space that I've really enjoyed exploring. Compared to the tracks from Meniscus Reboot, Moja is more predictable in its arrangement. It doesn't constantly surprise you or take you in unexpected directions. Instead, it follows a more familiar structure, allowing the different elements to come together naturally.

But there's one element that really stands out to me: the guitar.

There's a beautiful guitar part in Moja that I absolutely love. For me, it's the strength of the entire track. It adds something special to the song, and every time I listen to it, I'm reminded of just how much I love music built around beautiful instrumentation.

Beyond the sound, though, it's the lyrics that really drew me to this song.

2026 has been a difficult year for me. I've been going through a lot, and the idea of searching, of trying to find something when you're not entirely sure what it is, resonated with me deeply.

Sometimes, life leaves you with more questions than answers. You find yourself looking for direction, for meaning, for a sense of connection, or simply for something that makes you feel a little more like yourself. You may not know where the search will take you, but you keep going anyway.

That's the feeling I connected with in Moja.

Interestingly, this theme continues into my next release, Starry Nights. While Moja is about searching, Starry Nights explores remembering. The two songs approach different experiences, but there's a connection between them. One looks for something that might be missing; the other reflects on something that has already been experienced.

They're different songs, with different sounds and their own stories to tell, but both come from a place of reflection.

Of course, that's only what these songs mean to me. One of the things I love about music is that once you share it with the world, people bring their own experiences to it. A song that means one thing to its creator can mean something entirely different to the person listening.

And that's perfectly fine.

I hope you enjoy Moja. I hope the music and lyrics find you wherever you happen to be in life, and perhaps give you something to connect with along the way.

You can listen to the track here, or on Spotify.

If you'd like to support me directly, you can purchase Moja on Bandcamp.

Thank you for listening, and I'll see you next month for the next release.
